May 27, 2026 — Sixth Judicial District Attorney Norman R. Wheeler announced that 39-year-old Julian M. Piñon is being held without bond in Luna County after being charged with;
1 Count Aggravated Battery Against a Household Member (Strangulation or Suffocation), a 3rd Degree Felony,
1 Count Abuse of a Child (Does Not Result in Death or Great Bodily Harm), a 3rd Degree Felony,
1 count Battery (Household Member), a Misdemeanor.
The Deming police investigation began after a call was made to 911 regarding a domestic disturbance complaint.
District Attorney Norman Wheeler represented the State during the hearing. The Honorable Jennifer Delaney of the Sixth Judicial District Court presided over the hearing and granted the State’s Motion for Pretrial Detention. Judge DeLaney determined that Piñon poses a continued danger to the community and a risk to the victims. Because Piñon was already under active conditions of release at the time of this incident, his actions demonstrate a pattern of ongoing violence and a failure to comply with court orders.
The court found sufficient evidence to bind Piñon over for trial on all counts, and he will remain in custody until the case concludes or the court orders otherwise.
Following the decision, District Attorney Wheeler praised the victim's courage in coming forward, along with the dedication of law enforcement in securing justice.
