Meet Your District Attorney

Norman R. Wheeler

Thank you, I am truly humbled to have the opportunity to serve our communities as the 6th Judicial District Attorney for Grant, Hildago and Luna counties. I have dedicated my life to fighting criminals in prosecution throughout New Mexico. I will put my experience handling thousands of criminal cases in 4 District Attorney's offices across New Mexico to work for you. I am committed to transparency, justice and will fight to keep my community safe ... bottom line.

I am ready to go to work, developing and strengthening strong partnerships with citizens and law enforcement. I cannot do the work of the District Attorney without the participation of citizens and law enforcement working together as a community. Please contact my office for any questions you may have.

- I will tell you what I know when I can without jeopardizing an active case and what I don’t know, even if it is not popular.

I believe that everything that had been an issue with crime in our counties was not a Democrat or Republican problem, rather it was a community problem impacting ALL citizens.
The Sixth Judicial District Attorney's Office is a governmental agency whose responsibility is to seek justice within the bounds of the law, serving the public's interest with integrity and balanced judgment to increase public safety.

What Our Office Does

The prosecuting attorneys of the Sixth Judicial District Attorney’s Office are passionate and committed to providing the most effective prosecutorial services to and for the people of the Sixth Judicial District. Our prosecutors stay informed of best practices and employ new approaches accordingly.

New Mexico law requires prosecutors to provide support services for victims of certain crimes enumerated by statute.The Sixth Judicial District Attorney's Office's Victim Witness Assistance Program provides services and support to victims of all crimes, regardless of whether they are enumerated. Our advocates demonstrate compassion and understanding, validating crime victims’ experiences and feelings throughout the judicial process until case disposition.

Our Vision

As we reform our outdated criminal justice practices and implement a prevention and rehabilitation approach that still incorporates required measures of accountability, the Sixth Judicial District strives to become the safest and most cost-effective district in the State of New Mexico.

Our Mission

The Mission of the Sixth Judicial District Attorney’s Office is to ensure that the criminal justice system works to protect the people of our communities as we enforce the law by pursuing truth and justice with integrity, professionalism, and compassion.

Our Values

Support For Victims

1.

We treat all people with dignity and respect.

2.

We support all victims of all crimes (enumerated and non-enumerated) and understand that any crime can leave a lasting negative impact on the victim.

3.

We show compassion and understanding to victims of crime, and we validate their experiences and feelings.

4.

We assess and refer victims to appropriate services and introduce victims to service providers through warm handoffs.

5.

We keep victims informed of case progress and provide them with notices of hearings in a timely fashion.

6.

We meet face to face with victims and prosecutors to discuss the case status and ask for their input regarding what they want to see happen.

7.

We advocate for victims with the Crime Victims’ Reparations Commission (CVRC) and other providers to assist them in obtaining the necessary assistance they require.

Justice

We enforce laws fairly and uniformly to ensure equal protection and justice.

3.

Justice is best served when all parties (judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, etc.) work in a collaborative and respectful manner.

We collaborate with stakeholders to develop and implement programming that is aimed at reducing recidivism and increasing the well-being of our citizens.

We are proactive in our approach and bring new and innovative ideas to our partners when we learn of the latest best practices, educating them on the need for change, and providing practical solutions for implementing the changes.

We attend various community meetings to keep informed of current events and issues in our district and share information with our initiatives to gain support from the larger group.
